great monitor but: July 30, 2010 charles kevin stewart 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this monitor after some research, but the reviews sold me, so i gave it a try. Hooked it up and loved it. However, after about 40 days, a vertical red line appeared stretching from the bottom of the screen all the way to the top. Called amazon, customer service said there was nothing they could do for me since it was past 30 days, but gave me the number to tech support at hp. I figured i'd get the call center in India, and I was right. After talking to an Indian guy named Bob for 30 minutes, unplugging the monitor and then plugging it back in, disconnecting the vga cable and then connecting it back up, you know, to make sure I wasn't seeing things, he told me my monitor was damaged, no, really. He told me that they would send me out a "like new" monitor and when I got it, to send the damaged one back to them. When I questioned "Bob" as to why they weren't sending me a "new new" monitor, he told me that was their policy. After demanding to speak to Bob's boss, I finally got switched over to America, and talked to Todd. He sent me out return labels and a new new monitor, an hp2310m which i am told is the replacement for the 2338. It looks almost identical, and has a great picture. Hat's off to hp and Todd for making me a happy customer, well worth the 30 minute chat with Bob first.
Poor quality from a good design July 30, 2010 christi ulrich (Bainbridge Island, WA, US) Purchased four months ago to add to a Dell laptop. Liked the design and sharp looks, even the keyboard storage stand was great. Color reproduction using HDMI was acceptable for its primary use (wordprocessing) and even pretty decent for high-end graphics games. HOWEVER...after four months, a blue vertical line developed mid-screen, followed a few hours later by a red one...pixel lines already crashing HP? The monitor indicates only 270 hours of use (less then 7 work weeks) and it's already junk? It seems this isn't an isolated issue with this monitor, as several other reviewers report similar issues in short order. As this is the second HP monitor to have this issue, I think its time to switch to Dell.
Using It For 6 Months July 13, 2010 Slo-Hand So far I haven't had any problems with this monitor. I have both the HDMI and the VGA inputs going to different computers and the monitor recognizes whichever one is on. It goes into sleep mode when you leave your computer unattended and gets somewhat warm but that's probably not abnormal. I have used the picture adjustments to basically tone down the brightness but that's just personal taste. I really haven't had any issues with this monitor. It's pretty much a plug and play device. I purchased this as a display markdown from Costco with an HP a6857c desktop so the monitor was not new. My older computer uses a NVIDIA 6200 graphics card through the VGA and my newer computer uses an ati radeon 4670 card to hdmi so no incompatability problems there. If this monitor lasts another couple of years I would definitely seek out the same or similar model to replace it with. You have to get the viewing angle just right for your viewing sweet spot which is easy enough to do and once you get that you're set. I would totally recommend this monitor for the single sitting relatively static desktop user. If you like to stand or move around the room perhaps not as the perceived visual quality will degrade with angle. The glossy screen picks up reflections which under normal use is perfectly fine. For precise fps video gaming like 'Deer Drive' I like to dim the room lighting to reduce those reflections. It makes a significant difference in my scores and the number of rounds I complete. I don't use the onboard sound although the speakers work. For my purposes this monitor so far has been very satisfying.
Stop working around 80 days July 12, 2010 T. Vu Montior went blank with "buzz" noise just after 80 days. Other than that, it is very nice color. Called HP customer service, they agreed to send out new replacement without charge.
Can't compare June 27, 2010 Paul Dean Having never had a flat panel monitor before(besides the screens on our laptops) we are thoroughly enjoying our 23" monitor. Watching movies or playing video games is so much more enjoyable. As others have said the volume of the speakers is not that good, but if you hook up external speakers it's great!
